When we think of bees, honey and pollen are foremost in our thoughts. Yet another important substance, propolis, is a sticky resin collected by bees. Honeybees collect and metabolize the propolis, then line their hives with it to protect the hive. It’s so effective, the interior of the bee hive has been found to be safer than most operating rooms.

Propolis has a 5000-year history. The Assyrians and the Greeks used propolis to help maintain good health. Fortified with royal jelly, Forever Bee Propolis is an excellent way to help support the body’s natural defenses.

Forever Bee Propolis is gathered from pollution-free regions. To further assure purity, specially designed bee propolis collectors are used. Forever Bee Propolis is 100% natural with no added preservatives or artificial colors.

Forever Bee Propolis is collected in the high, pollution-free deserts of Arizona. To ensure its purity we use patented collectors. Forever Propolis is 100% natural with no artificial colorants or aromas. Each tablet contains 500mg of pure bee propolis strengthened with royal jelly, and has approximately 3 calories. WHAT IS PROPOLIS?

Propolis is a resinous substance found in trees and bushes which bees extract to hermetically seal their hives and prevent any type of infection forming inside the hive.

HISTORY: Propolis has been used for some years in Russia and in the distant past it was used to cure wounds. It is a very interesting product which is the subject of numerous studies. This substance, manufactured by bees, has been known to man since our very early history. The priests in Ancient Egypt frequently used it as a medicine and as an embalming cream. Later it was used by the Greeks, to whom we owe the name “propolis”.

Why do bees collect Propolis?

Bees use propolis for various reasons. They mainly use it for covering cracks and breakages in the hive. In cold areas, bees use it to reduce the opening of the vents, hence we can observe that the presence of a large amount of propolis is a sign of a hard, cold winter. Another use is to embalm any dead animal within the hive to isolate it, given the difficulty that its extraction would suppose. On occasion rats, lizards and even snakes have been found inside hives without having suffered any decomposition at all. Bees also use propolis to glue or stick down mobile parts of the hive. Finally, bees use propolis to cover the panels previous to the laying of the eggs by the queen. This is to disinfect the area.

PROPERTIES:
Historically we have already mentioned the use of propolis in the medical field. It possesses strong anti-bacterial and bacteriostatic properties, proven by the fact that the dead bodies surrounded by it in the hive do not decay.

In human medicine there have been positive results using propolis to treat upper respiratory infections, influenza, sinusitis, otitis, laringitis, bronchitis, bronchial asthma, chronic pneumonia and pulmonary tuberculosis. In dentistry it has been used to treat mouth abscesses. The majority of applications can been found in the dermatological area, mainly for problems such as abscesses, hives, various suppurations, chilblains, cracked skin, warts, calluses, eczema and psoriasis among others. In veterinary medicine the positive effect of propolis has been proven in the treatment of foot-and-mouth disease, bacilar necrosis, broncho-pneumonia, toxic dyspepsia, parafitus, mastitis etc. Propolis is also used as a local anaesthetic, highly esteemed for its healing and coagulating properties.

Anti-microbial Properties

The secret to the use of propolis in human and veterinary medicine, in the protection of grafts and hives and in the preparation of pharmaceutical products stems from its anti-microbial, bacteriostatic and bactericidal properties which come from the benzoic acids, oxibenzoic, metoxibenzoic, caffeic, ferulic, sesquiterpenes and flavonols (mainly galangin)

Fundamentally the properties of propolis can be attributed to the flavonoids pinocembrin, galangin, pinobanksin, pinobanksin-3-acetate and the benzyl ester from caffeic acid. Caffeic acid is one of the components which intervenes in the effects of propolis against Streptococcus aureus, Profeus vulgaris, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Helminthosporium sp. Clinical laboratory research corroborates the anti-microbial and anti-micotic effect of the products. The injectable solutions show in vitro, good anti-fungal action. The liquid extract gives good results treating mouth ulcers. The creams, clinically tested on a variety of cutaneous complaints have established observable results on localised itches and neurodermatitis.

ANTIVIRAL PROPERTIES

The capacity of propolis extracts to stem the development of pathogenic viral forms has been proven. The flavonoids reveal a well defined antiviral activity, especially apigenin, acacetin and pectolinarigenin, all found in the buds of the poplar and birch trees. Propolis deactivates the Aujesky virus and the vaccine strain La Sota, but not encefalomiocarditis; propolis has also proven harmless to laboratory animals and chicken embryos.

ALLERGY TO PROPOLIS

A small percentage of the population is allergic to propolis and other apiary products (pollen, royal jelly, honey, poison). Taking this into account, it is necessary to perform allergy tests on patients before beginning any treatment with propolis. Generally, allergic reactions to propolis are found in people who are allergic to bees or to their sting, also in people who suffer other types of allergy. Propolis is used above all, to treat complaints of the respiratory system and the oral cavity, but its field of application is far wider. Dermatology, internal medicine and even cosmetics have benefited from the regenerating and cicatrising properties of this most original substance collected by bees. Chewing a small piece of propolis from time to time refreshes your breath and increases oral hygiene.
